Quiet rooms only work if we all keep them that way.
Grayblock is people sitting down to work in front of each other, which takes a small amount of trust. These are the rules that protect it. There are not many, and none of them should surprise you.
Everywhere on Grayblock
Your profile, the leaderboard, messages, every room.
- Be decent
Assume the best of people. Most members are quiet strangers having an ordinary day, and a little warmth costs nothing.
- No harassment
No insults, threats, bullying, trolling or pile-ons. Unwanted attention after someone has asked you to stop is harassment, whatever it is about.
- No discrimination
Nothing hateful or prejudiced about race, caste, religion, gender, sexuality, age, disability, nationality or anything else someone did not choose.
- Nothing explicit
No sexual, violent or disturbing content anywhere — on camera, in your photo, in your bio or in chat. This is a study room, not a stream.
- Be yourself
No impersonating another member, a public figure or the Grayblock team. One person, one account, and you must be 18 or over.
- Guard your own details
Do not post your phone number, address, school or workplace where strangers can read it. And never share someone else's, whatever the reason.
- No advertising
Do not promote products, services, channels or paid groups, and do not pull people off to other platforms. If you think your thing genuinely belongs here, ask us first.
In a focus room
Where your camera is, so where it matters most.
- Your camera is your choice
Nobody has to turn it on, and nobody may pressure anyone to. A blank tile with a name on it is a completely normal way to be in a room.
- Never record anyone
No recordings, screenshots or photos of other members, ever, for any purpose. Grayblock does not record, and neither may you. This is the one rule we close accounts over without a warning.
- Keep your tile calm
Frame yourself, wear what you would wear to a library, and keep what is behind you work-appropriate. No flashing lights, no loud backgrounds, nothing designed to pull eyes.
- Come here to work
Rooms are for focus, not for an audience. If you are not going to work, that is fine — just do it somewhere that is not someone else's study hour.
- Respect the room's rhythm
Some rooms run timed blocks with shared breaks. Take breaks when the room takes them so the quiet stretches stay quiet.
In chat and messages
Room chat clears itself every 24 hours. It should not need to.
- Keep it light and kind
Hellos, encouragement, what you are working on. No spam, no walls of text, no profanity.
- Take no for an answer
A direct message that is not welcome should not be sent twice. No flirting with people who have not invited it, and no messaging someone repeatedly who has not replied.
- English in shared spaces
So everyone in the room can follow along, and so we can moderate what is said. Any language you like in direct messages.
Tell us. We would much rather know.
If someone breaks a rule, write to us with their name or handle, the room, and roughly when it happened. We read every report, and the person you report is never told who reported them.
If you feel unsafe, leave the room first and write to us afterwards. Nothing is worth sitting through.
Report somethingWhat happens next
- We acknowledge your report within 24 hours.
- We look at what happened, and we may ask you for more detail.
- Depending on what we find: a warning, removal from a room, a suspension, or a closed account.
- We tell you it has been dealt with. We do not share what we did to someone else.
Recording another member, or anything involving a minor, skips straight to a closed account.
These rules sit alongside our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and we may update them as the community grows. We use our judgement in applying them, and we will always explain a decision if you ask.
